Mecklenburg County to Celebrate Mallard Creek Recreation Center Reopening

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation will mark the reopening of Mallard Creek Recreation Center by hosting a community celebration on May 3. The County has completed an extensive renovation of the building, and is inviting residents to see the upgrades, have some fun, and make the recreation center part of their regular routines.

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation will host the free community celebration at 2530 Johnston Oehler Road in Charlotte from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. Attendees will enjoy games and activities, bouncy houses, live music and food trucks.

About the Renovations

Updates to the building include a new main entry lobby, restrooms, a multipurpose room and offices. The County also improved the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and electrical, security and fire protection systems. The exterior grounds now feature a new playground, walking track and multipurpose fields.

The 20,000-square-foot center was built in 1997. In 2008, Mecklenburg County voters approved $250 million in bonds to build new park and recreation facilities and to improve existing ones. Improvements at Mallard Creek Recreation Center, which had reached its capacity for programs, were funded by the bonds. The Fiscal Year 2023 Mecklenburg County budget included the renovations as a capital project.

The center closed for construction in December 2023. Work on the center concluded in early 2025.

Reopening Schedule

The doors to Mallard Creek Recreation Center are now open. Guests can play during open gymnasium hours, access fitness areas, and reserve multipurpose rooms. Mallard Creek Recreation Center will ramp up its schedule of programs later in the spring and summer.

Fitness memberships are available by contacting Mallard Creek Recreation Center. Staff will help guests find the pass that meets their needs. MeckPass is the best value for families, youth, adults and seniors looking for fitness and aquatics amenities across Mecklenburg County.
