CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The City of Charlotte Planning, Design & Development Department is pleased to announce the release of the 14 Draft Community Area Plans, a pivotal component in implementing the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

These plans provide more detailed recommendations for shaping the built environment, addressing factors such as land use, urban design, transportation and infrastructure.
Designed to build upon the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan’s vision, the Community Area Plans serve as essential policy guidance within the city’s robust planning framework. These plans provide detailed guidance and strategic direction to ensure that all development initiatives align with Charlotte’s long-term vision for sustainable growth and community enhancement.
“With the introduction of the Community Area Plans, we are taking significant strides towards realizing Charlotte’s future goals,” Interim Planning Director Monica Holmes said. “These plans not only enhance our ability to manage growth effectively but also foster vibrant, resilient neighborhoods that reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of our residents.”
Key features of the Community Area Plans include:
- Identification of the geography’s greatest needs
- A recommended development pattern for each geography
- Identification of private and public investments needed to support future growth
City Encourages Resident Review and Feedback
Community feedback is essential in ensuring that the plans reflect the needs and priorities of Charlotte’s diverse neighborhoods.
The city encourages all stakeholders to review the draft plans and provide feedback by Friday, May 9. Draft plans and feedback options are detailed on the project website. The city is hosting virtual office hours every Tuesday and Thursday, where residents can ask questions and learn more about the plans.
A public hearing will be held on Monday, April 28, providing another opportunity for community input.
All input received will be cataloged and reviewed for common themes. City Council will consider this feedback, along with staff recommendations, before making final decisions on the plans.
As Charlotte continues to evolve, the implementation of these plans underscores the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development and community-driven growth. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders and community input, the Community Area Plans will guide future investments and initiatives, ensuring that Charlotte remains a vibrant and desirable place to live, work and play.
